Apple AirTag Gen 2 with greater range and a louder speaker is here
The new Apple AirTag Gen 2, with greater range for tracking objects and a louder speaker, was officially unveiled today.
For those who don’t know it yet: The AirTag is a small accessory that can be attached to a backpack, keyring, or other items. The location of these items can then be tracked in the “Find My” app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and iCloud.com.
Apple AirTag Gen 2 with new UWB chip
The new Apple AirTag Gen 2 is equipped with a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which, according to Apple, allows Precision Tracking to work up to 50% farther away from the object compared to the previous model. The new AirTag also features an improved Bluetooth chip for greater range even outside of Precision Tracking mode.
According to Apple, the new AirTag has a speaker that is 50% louder than its predecessor thanks to a redesigned internal structure.
The external design of the Apple AirTag Gen 2 remains unchanged, although its weight has increased slightly. The accessory is still powered by a CR2032 coin cell battery and, like its predecessor, is IP67 water-resistant. As with the previous model, Apple claims the new AirTag offers a battery life of “more than a year”.
Free personalized AirTag engraving remains available on Apple.com and in the Apple Store app. The new AirTag is also compatible with all existing AirTag accessories, including the FineWoven Keyring, which retains the same design and color options. However, Apple states that the new AirTag requires an iPhone running the upcoming iOS version 26.2.1 or later.
watchOS 26.2.1 is also released and expands the “Precise Search” feature to the Apple Watch Series 9 and newer as well as the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and newer. Whether this only applies to the new AirTag or also works with the original model has not yet been confirmed.
Apple introduced the AirTag in 2021, meaning users had to wait almost five years for a new model. “Since the launch of AirTag in 2021, users worldwide have reported how they recovered lost luggage, keys, bikes, bags, and much more,” Apple said in a press release. “Using AirTag placed inside an instrument case, one musician was able to locate their lost instrument and perform that same evening, while another user recovered lost luggage containing life-saving medication.”
Prices
The new Apple AirTag Gen 2 is available to order starting today on Apple.com and in the Apple Store app, and will be available in Apple Stores by the end of the week. A single AirTag still costs 35 Euros/29 US Dollars, the four-pack remains at 119 euros/99 US dollars.
According to Apple, the AirTag is the world’s best-selling object tracking accessory. It competes with trackers from Tile, Samsung, Pebblebee, Chipolo and others.
