New Powerbeats Pro 2 launch with firmware update
Apple’s new Powerbeats Pro 2 will also receive the first firmware update on the first day of sales, as Apple has just released new software for the earphones. They will ship with firmware version 7B15, while the new firmware has version number 7B24. You can think of that as is often the case in the tech industry, but you could also say that, as is often the case in the tech industry, a product was not ready on time.
There is no information on what is included in the new firmware, but the Powerbeats Pro 2 have a heart rate monitoring function that has never been included in Apple headphones before. Integrated optical LED sensors measure the heart rate based on the blood flow in the ears.
In addition to heart rate monitoring, the Powerbeats Pro 2 offer active noise cancellation, personalized spatial audio, Apple’s H2 chip for the connection functions and improved sound. In terms of design, the ear hook has become 50% smaller compared to the original. There are also more ear tip sizes, 20% less weight, and a slimmer case with longer battery life.
To install the updated firmware, the Powerbeats Pro 2 must be plugged in and within Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You can also preview the firmware on your iPhone beforehand by going to Settings > Bluetooth and tapping the About button next to the Beats headphones in the list. Android users can download new Beats firmware via the Beats app for Android.
The new Beats headphones are available for pre-order from Apple’s website starting today. The launch is scheduled for Thursday, February 13. The price is €299.95 / $249.99.
