Apple MacBook Air: First LCD-2.0, then OLED

According to a new report from The Elec, Apple plans to release a MacBook Air in 2027 with an improved LCD display that features oxide TFT technology instead of the current amorphous silicon (a-Si) panels. The new display technology is said to be a significant improvement over current Apple MacBook Air displays. Oxide TFT LCD panels offer better power efficiency and improved performance compared to traditional a-Si displays, resulting in sharper images, smoother scrolling, and longer battery life.

The switch to oxide TFT technology is expected to speed up pixel response times on the Apple MacBook Air screen and distribute brightness more evenly across the entire screen. This could result in reduced motion blur when watching videos or playing games, and more homogeneous lighting without the occasional “clouding” effect on current LCD displays.

According to the Korean-language report, Samsung Display and BOE are working to expand their production capabilities for innovative panels, including the next Apple MacBook Air. Samsung Display is equipping its A6 production line with new coating machines, while BOE is integrating similar capabilities in its B16 line. Both companies plan to produce millions of units per year, but exact production targets have not been made public.

Apple has reportedly delayed the release of its OLED MacBook Air from 2027 to 2029 or later. At the same time, work is continuing on the OLED MacBook Pro with a slimmer design, which is expected to launch in 2026 and will have an estimated annual production of 3 to 5 million units.
