Samsung Galaxy Watch7 with 3nm chip, Watch Ultra with titanium case unveiled
In addition to the Galaxy Z Fold6, the Z Flip6 and the Galaxy Ring, Samsung has also launched new smartwatches. The Samsung Galaxy Watch7 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra are here. The Ultra is available in a single 47mm size, while the Galaxy Watch7 starts in the usual 40mm and 44mm sizes. Unfortunately, neither watch has a rotating bezel, so there is no Classic model this year.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra is of course the Koreans’ answer to the Apple Watch Ultra series and thus to the current Apple Watch Ultra 2. Both watches have a lot in common, including the design and the claim to withstand the toughest outdoor use. Samsung calls the whole thing a pillow design – a rectangle with a circular dial and bezel. There are three buttons on the side, including the new “quick button” in the middle with additional functions.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra is available in a single 47mm size. It is based on a 1.5-inch Super AMOLED display with 480 x 480 pixels and up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. The display sits under very hard sapphire glass, so scratches shouldn’t be a problem. The case is made of grade 4 titanium and weighs 60.5 g. The mix of materials creates water resistance up to 100 meters and meets IP68 and MIL-STD-810H standards for water, dust and shock resistance. In addition, it can withstand temperatures between +55° and -20° and survives altitudes of up to 9,000 meters above or 500 meters below sea level.
A 590 mAh battery provides the power, just like in the Galaxy Watch5 Pro from 2022. This gives the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra the longest battery life of all Galaxy Watches. Up to 100 hours are possible in power saving mode and 48 hours in power saving mode for exercises. The frugality is thanks to the new Exynos W1000 chipset. The 3Nm chip has a CPU three times faster than the W930 and 2GB of RAM, but is still 30% more efficient, according to Samsung.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra also finally has dual-band GPS for more precise tracking, even in dense urban environments. Over 100 sports and multi-part workouts can be tracked. The latter are essentially different activities as a combined workout. The Ultra also knows a thing or two about FTP index tracking or Functional Threshold Power for maximum cycling performance. For runners, there’s a new Race mode that can compare your current performance in real time with a second workout. However, this only works when running outdoors.
The Galaxy Watch Ultra also offers AI-powered tracking algorithms, of course, as well as an improved BioActive sensor. Sleep analysis is better thanks to new sleep apnea support that detects abnormally high or low heart rates. The new smartwatches can also check for irregular rhythms that indicate atrial fibrillation. The ECG and blood pressure monitoring are still there, as is the skin temperature sensor, which is also used to predict a woman’s period.
Finally, the new Galaxy Watch Ultra and Galaxy Watch7 can do advanced glycation tracking to monitor your sugar levels. They then give you an AGEs index – an index of the biological aging process that gives you insight into your metabolic health.
Samsung Galaxy Watch7
The Samsung Galaxy Watch7 shares all of these advanced fitness and health metrics. It also has the same sapphire crystal, new BioActive sensor and Exynos W1000 5-core chipset.
It comes in two sizes – 40mm with a 1.3-inch 432 x 432 pixel Super AMOLED display and 44mm with a 1.5-inch 480 x 480 pixel display. The latter is the same size as the Galaxy Watch Ultra. And while the Galaxy Watch7 can’t climb the highest mountains and isn’t suitable for deep diving, it still meets the MIL-STD-810H standard and is always waterproof to 50 meters.
Both smartwatches are the first models to run Google Wear OS 5 (until the Pixel Watch 3 starts in August). They also come with Samsung’s One UI 6 Watch interface.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra and Galaxy Watch7 can be pre-ordered from today and will ship from July 24. The Galaxy Watch7 starts at €320/$300/£290 for the 40mm Bluetooth model in green or cream. The maximum price you’ll pay is €350/$330/£320 for the 44mm variant in green or silver. The Galaxy Watch Ultra is available in titanium gray, titanium white and titanium silver and only with Bluetooth and 4G. The price is €700/$650/£600. However, there are already several Samsung deals available directly from the manufacturer.
