Motorola Razr 50 and Razr 50 Ultra presented in China, world market next
Lenovo, Motorola’s parent company, today unveiled the new Razr 50 foldable series, among a number of other technologies. It consists of two smartphones – the flagship Motorola Razr 50 Ultra with a 4-inch cover display and a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset, and the cheaper but still pretty capable Razr 50 with a Dimensity 7300X chip.
Motorola Razr 50 Ultra
The main feature of the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra is the larger cover display with even thinner bezels than last year’s Razr 40 Ultra. It’s the largest display of its kind on a foldable device we’ve seen so far. The pOLED panel delivers 1080p resolution, 100% DCI-P3 color space coverage, and support for HDR10+. It even supports a variable refresh rate of 1-165Hz and offers various features. This includes watching videos, getting navigation details, or as a viewfinder for selfies.
The familiar 6.9-inch FHD+ pOLED main display of the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra now covers 120% of the DCI-P3 color space. The refresh rate is again variable between 1 and 165 Hz, and the touch sampling rate is 360 Hz in selected modes. The peak brightness reaches a bright 3,000 nits. Behind a cutout is a selfie camera with a 32 megapixel sensor and an f/2.4 lens.
A major improvement is the new dual camera of the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra. There is now a 50 megapixel f/1.7 main camera and a 50 megapixel f/2.0 telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom. AI features are of course also on board, just like every other manufacturer this year. The battery has a capacity of 4,000mAh and offers 45W fast charging as well as 15W wireless charging – both upgrades from last year.
The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra runs Android 14 and Moto MyUX. It is IPX8 water-resistant, a first for Razr devices, although the fine print limits submersion time at 1.5m depth to just 10 seconds. There are three Pantone color options – dill, navy blazer and fuzz. Prices are CNY 5,699 (€730/$785) for 12/256GB and CNY 6,199 (€800/$850) for 12/512GB.
Motorola Razr 50
The regular Motorola Razr 50 uses a 3.6-inch pOLED cover display instead of 1.5 inches on the Razr 40. The inner panel has the same specifications as the Ultra – 6.9 inches with Full HD+ resolution and 3,000 nits peak brightness. It also inherits the 6000 aluminum frame from its big brother as well as the 32-megapixel selfie camera and the 50-megapixel main camera with OIS. Unfortunately, the second camera on the back is only a 13-megapixel f/2.2 ultrawide camera, but at least it has a 120-degree field of view.
The new Dimensity 7300X chip was introduced last month as a dedicated platform for foldables. And just as the rumor mill expected, the Razr 50 is the first model with the chip. It has four 2.5 GHz Cortex-A78 cores and another four 2.0 GHz Cortex-A55. There is also a Mali-G615 GPU with the in-house HyperEngine for graphics and gaming tasks. The battery here has a capacity of 4,200 mAh and charges with 30 watts wired and 15 watts wirelessly. The Razr 50 also comes with Android 14 and Motorola’s user interface.
The Motorola Razr 50 is available in three Pantone colors – Steel Wool, Pumice Stone and Arabesque – and all three are equipped with vegan leather panels. Prices are 3,699 CNY (475 €/510 $) for 8/256 GB and 3,999 CNY (515 €/550 $) for 12/512 GB. Both Motorola smartphones are already available in China. There was no mention of a global launch, but all of Motorola’s social channels around the world have announced the unveiling of these models today.
