Call of Duty: Warzone, the massive free-to-play combat arena game, is leaving last-generation platforms. Alongside the announcement of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 in May, Activision revealed that Warzone will no longer be playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One after the end of the year.

Support for Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will end shortly after the launch of Modern Warfare 4’s first season. The next main installment in the CoD series will be released on October 23. Warzone will remain playable on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 only on current platforms

Activision and the CoD teams’ decision to discontinue support for Call of Duty: Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will hardly surprise players on these platforms. After all, Modern Warfare 4 is also abandoning last-generation consoles – this year’s main installment in the Call of Duty series will be released for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Call of Duty: Warzone will remain available on current-generation consoles. Starting with Season 1 of Modern Warfare 4, Warzone will “integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression into a cohesive experience across both titles,” according to a post attributed to the CoD team.

Downloads for PS4 and Xbox One have already been removed. Existing players can continue playing until the start of MW4 Season 1. In June, the in-game shop for Warzone will be removed on PS4 and Xbox One. However, players can still unlock free Battle Pass tiers and thus earn new weapons in the remaining Black Ops 7 seasons.

Warzone originally launched in 2020 as a free-to-play battle royale game set in the CoD universe. This version was discontinued in 2023 following the release of its successor, Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. The 2022 version of Warzone ultimately dropped the “2.0” designation.
