Battlefield 6’s third season launches next month and will introduce the game’s largest map to date. “Railway to Golmud” is a reimagining of the popular Golmud railway map from Battlefield 4. The developers have already offered a closer look at the map and revealed some key changes, including major adjustments to the train.

In its latest blog post, Battlefield Studios describes this revamped version of the Railway to Golmud as “a tribute to the long-standing Battlefield community”.

“We have better technology than we did 13 years ago. […] Two of the original level designers for Golmud Railway are still at DICE, so we all worked together not only to recreate their work, but also to understand what wasn’t possible in Battlefield 4 and bring those ideas to life in Battlefield 6.”

Luka Grepl-Malmgren, Level Designer

At launch, Golmud Railway was the largest map in Battlefield 4, and its most striking feature was the moving train that players could capture. Now, the developers have completely overhauled the train’s movement logic and design for the revamped Golmud Railway. The train now offers multiple carriages for more cover and parkour opportunities.

Battlefield 6 train is now heading towards the enemy

Regarding movement, the train now travels to the enemy headquarters instead of the headquarters of the team that captured the objective. According to the developers, this change was made to prevent monotonous train gameplay.

“In this version, the train is now easier to recapture, but the team holding the objective now also has a strategic location to spawn and capture the flag, which is closest to the enemy headquarters,” explained Grepl-Malmgren.

Although the train connection is arguably the most noticeable change, “Railway to Golmud” offers dozens of other updates that provide infantry with more cover, better flanking opportunities, and additional airspace for improved vertical control. An example of the map changes can be seen in the image above.

Some of the biggest criticisms of Battlefield 6 were the general lack of maps and the absence of the large, vehicle-driven maps the series is known for. Battlefield Studios aims to address this with Season 3 and furthermore, as the latest roadmap announces that more large maps are planned after “Railway to Golmud”.
