Rockstar Games, the developer of GTA 6, has once again been the target of a hacking attack. A group called ShinyHunters claims to have hacked into the servers of cloud provider Anodot. They announced they would publish the stolen data online after their demands were not met.

Rockstar confirmed the hack in a statement to Kotaku. However, the company stated that the incident was not serious and that it would not pay the ransom. A spokesperson explained: “We can confirm that a limited amount of non-essential company information was accessed in connection with a data breach at a third-party provider.”

The hacking group announced on April 11 that they had accessed the data via Anodot (according to Cybersec Guru and Hackread). Hackers frequently target such third-party providers, but ShinyHunters has not yet disclosed what type of data was stolen. Following the announcement of the hack, the share price of Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, fell by more than 6% in pre-market trading. It subsequently recovered to its usual level.

GTA 6 not affected

A later report from Kotaku stated that files had surfaced on the dark web. Apparently, they mainly relate to user spending habits and less to material about upcoming games like GTA 6.

Following previous attacks, Rockstar Games had strengthened its internal security measures and recently dismissed over 30 employees at home and abroad for allegedly discussing “confidential information” in a public forum.

The dismissals were heavily criticized. The dismissed employees claim they were punished for wanting to form a union.

In 2022, a British teenager released Gigabyte’s early GTA 6 gameplay footage after gaining access to the company’s internal Slack chats. The hacker, who was part of a gang called… Lapsus$ He was eventually apprehended and sentenced to life imprisonment in a prison hospital. Furthermore, in January there was a explosion in a Rockstar developer office.

GTA 6 will be released on November 19th for PS5 and Xbox Series X and Series S. Reports indicate that the game’s online mode will not be available at launch.
