Pokémon Winds & Waves could get a completely new monster type

There have never been nine different type combinations in a Pokémon game before. Will there be a Fire/Fairy Pom-on or a Fire/Fighting Pom-on?

With 18 main types, there’s no shortage of Pokémon affinity combinations. One might assume that the monster-collecting series has tried out every possible combination of these types over the course of 30 years. After all, the last truly new type wasn’t introduced until 2013. With so many installments and remakes of the main series, the wellspring of new types should have dried up long ago.

Ten new Pokémon type combinations

There actually are ten type combinations, which we’ve never seen before in a Pokémon game. Some of these absences are understandable. Combinations like Normal/Ice, Normal/Bug, Normal/Rock, and Normal/Steel could just as easily be the second type. “Normal” adds nothing to these descriptions. However, it can’t be completely ruled out that they will ever appear: Both Hisuian Zorua and Hisuian Zoroark are the contradiction in terms, namely Normal/Ghost.

But five combinations are quite conceivable in Winds & Waves: Ice/Poison, Ground/Fairy, Bug/Dragon, Rock/Ghost, and Fire/Fairy. So, how likely is it that we’ll see one of these new type combinations? For the starter Pokémon, we have the fiery Pom-Bon as a potential candidate for the legendary Fire/Fairy combination.

Besides its rarity, fans continue to hope for a Fire/Fairy-type Pokémon, because this combination could result in a powerful Pokémon. As Game Rant notes the Fire/Fairy combination would have few weaknesses but a whopping eight resistances. It would be highly effective against seven different types and even immune to at least one. Assuming the combination has good base stats, a Fire/Fairy combination could be monstrous. However, as cool – and potentially overpowered – as a Fire/Fairy Pom-on might be, Game Freak is better known for Fire/Fighting final stages of starter Pokémon.

Air or water types

Given the game’s theme, it’s reasonable to assume that the Legendary Pokémon will feature a combination of Flying or Water types rather than a previously unseen mix. However, there is reason for hope. The first trailer for Winds and Waves showcases biomes like jungles and volcanic caves. These locations could be promising candidates for the introduction of Bug/Dragon, Ground/Fairy, or perhaps some of the other currently unused types.

Perhaps Game Freak will surprise us with a completely new idea in Winds & Waves, like a sonic monster. At the end of 2025, leakers claimed that internal Game Freak documents mentioned a new monster type called Seed Pokémon.

“A baby Pokémon of the Seed species, found in holiday resorts […] It is rarely seen in this country, and no one has ever seen it in its evolved form. Once it reaches the island where the legendary main Pokémon lives, it begins to evolve. Its appearance in its evolved form is said to have infinite variations.”

The caveat here is that Winds & Waves is still in development and the leaked documents were never intended for public release. There’s a high probability that Game Freak, even if they experimented with so-called Seed Pokémon, will ultimately decide against it.

Game Freak could implement Seed Pokémon differently than described. The term could refer to a temporary state, like Mega Evolution, rather than a permanent affinity. They could be introduced at some point, but in a completely different game. However, if “infinite variations” do become a reality, the days of the long list of unused types might be numbered.
