Nintendo Switch 2: First pictures with 8.4-inch display

According to a recent leak, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be powered by an Nvidia Tegra T239 chipset with 1,536 CUDA cores.

The original Nintendo Switch came out in 2017 and has since become the third best-selling console of all time (behind the PS2 and Nintendo DS). The original model had a 6.2-inch LCD display, and as a mid-generation refresh, Nintendo released the Switch OLED with a 7.0-inch OLED panel. While Nintendo is clearly in no rush, it seems that the second-generation model is slowly getting ready – the Nintendo Switch 2.

CAD renders of the Nintendo Switch 2 show that it will have an 8.4-inch display (most likely OLED) and will be larger in all dimensions. That’s a notable jump in display size, with 44% more surface area. This assumes Nintendo sticks with the 16:9 format, which appears to be the case. Rumors suggest that the screen resolution will also adjust to the larger diagonal, increasing from 720p to 1080p.

The Joy-Cons will be removable, albeit with an improved attachment method, which you can see in the image above. Still, they are taller, wider and thicker than the first generation Cons, which should improve ergonomics – the original Cons weren’t particularly tall. However, the controls are the same and have the same layout.

According to the renders, the Nintendo Switch 2 has a USB-C port on the bottom with alignment holes for the dock. Interestingly, similar holes also appear on the top, whatever they lost there. There are also ventilation holes on the top, so the chipset is actively cooled.

Nintendo Switch 2 with 1,536 CUDA cores

According to a recent leak, the console will be powered by an Nvidia Tegra T239 chipset. The 2023 chip features one Cortex-X1, three Cortex-A78, and four Cortex-A55 cores, as well as an Ampere GPU with 1,536 CUDA cores. The T239 is based on a 5Nm node. That’s not cutting edge, but it’s not too old either.

The original Switch used a Tegra X1/X1+ on a 20nm/16nm node and had only four Cortex-A57 cores and a Maxwell GPU with 256 CUDA cores. The question is what to make of the 31.4mm thickness. That would be more than twice as thick as the original Switch. It could be a mistake or Nintendo could have included a huge battery.
