Nintendo is venturing into territory it hasn’t explored in over 30 years: a live-action adaptation of its video games. “The Legend of Zelda,” a co-production of Sony Pictures and Nintendo, is slated for release in April 2027 and will bring the fantasy role-playing game series to life in an unprecedented way.

Following the success of “Super Mario Bros. – The Movie” and “Super Mario Galaxy – The Movie,” expectations for “The Legend of Zelda” are enormous. Sony Pictures and Nintendo have hired Wes Ball (“Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” “Planet of the Apes: Kingdom”) to bring Hyrule to the big screen. Ball explained that he wants to make “The Legend of Zelda” series more realistic and grounded, and not rely solely on motion-capture computer graphics.

Nintendo announced in September that the Zelda movie would simply be called “The Legend of Zelda.” “Once you see the movie, you’ll understand why there’s no subtitle,” said Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of “The Legend of Zelda” series. “This is an original film based on the many stories, ideas, and concepts of the series that have evolved over 40 years in the games.”

To lend the film more authenticity, Ball is using real actors in Hylian tunics and with artificial elf ears. While Nintendo has already confirmed two of the main actors – Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link – the rest of the cast is gradually leaking out through unofficial channels.

Here’s what we know so far about the cast of The Legend of Zelda from 2027.

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth was announced as Link by Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto in 2025. The 17-year-old British actor starred in Mike Flanagan’s Netflix horror series “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and voiced Pinocchio in Robert Zemeckis’ live-action adaptation of “Pinocchio.” Ainsworth also appeared in the third season of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” as Daeron Targaryen, a role in which he also wore a green tunic and wielded a sword.

Bo Bragason is Princess Zelda

Bo Bragason has been cast alongside Ainsworth in the role of Princess Zelda. The 22-year-old British actress previously played the sister of the title character Nell in the Disney+ series “Renegade Nell.” Bragason was most recently seen in the Prime Video productions “Sterling Point” and “King & Conqueror” (BBC One).

Uli Latukefu is Ganondorf

Reports indicate that Uli Latukefu has been cast as the villain Ganondorf in “The Legend of Zelda.” Ganondorf is the Gerudo form of the more monstrous Ganon. Latukefu is an Australian actor known for his roles as Dwayne Johnson in the NBC comedy series “Young Rock” and as Byamba in the Netflix series “Marco Polo.”

Dichen Lachman is Impa

Dichen Lachman’s role as Impa, Princess Zelda’s bodyguard, in “The Legend of Zelda” film was practically confirmed by set photos from the production. A report from Deadline now officially confirms it. Lachman is best known for her roles in Apple TV’s “Severance,” Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planets of the Apes.”

Sam Neill is the King of Hyrule

The late Sam Neill will appear in “The Legend of Zelda” in one of his final roles. Reports indicate that Neill will play Zelda’s father, the King of Hyrule. Neill is best known for his work in the “Jurassic Park” series, “The Hunt for Red October,” and “Event Horizon.”

Yvonne Strahovski is the Queen of Hyrule

Yvonne Strahovski, known for her work in The Handmaid’s Tale, Mass Effect 2, Chuck and other films, is reportedly set to play Zelda’s mother, also known as the Queen of Hyrule.

Lydia Peckham is also on board

Deadline reported that Lydia Peckham will appear alongside Ball again in “The Legend of Zelda”—in an as-yet-unknown role. Peckham previously starred in “Planet of the Apes: Kingdom of the Apes,” the Netflix film “The Kennedys,” and the MGM Plus film “Robin Hood.”

Nintendo’s Zelda movie was announced in 2023. Nintendo is collaborating with Sony Pictures Entertainment on this project. Shigeru Miyamoto, co-creator of “The Legend of Zelda,” and Hollywood veteran Avi Arad are serving as producers. Miyamoto stated in 2023 that he had been working on the film for many years.

The Legend of Zelda will be released in theaters on April 30, 2027. Incidentally, this film is technically Link’s second appearance in front of a camera: several years ago, he appeared rapping in a Japanese commercial for “The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past”.
