Darth Maul (voiced by Sam Witwer) returns to the spotlight with “Maul: Shadow Lord,” a brand-new animated series from Lucasfilm Animation, premiering April 6 on Disney+. We already know that Maul is focused on rebuilding his criminal empire on a new planet, Janix. But as the latest trailer reveals, there are plenty more secrets for Star Wars fans to uncover.

Star Wars Maul: Devon Izara and the Rule of Two

In the new trailer, Maul laments that the Empire has betrayed him. This betrayal must have consequences – more precisely, he needs a weapon to defend himself against the Imperials. The camera lingers on Devon Izara, a young Twi’lek Jedi who, like all other Jedi, is hiding from the Empire after Order 66. “Together we can destroy the Empire,” Maul says.

The trailer then shows Devon talking to her reptilian companion (also a Jedi) about Maul’s attempt to persuade them to fight together as allies. Her companion confirms that while the Empire is their common enemy, Maul will “never” be their ally.

There are theories that Devon could be Disney’s answer to Darth Talon, a character who was Maul’s Padawan. However, if this is the case, he will no longer exist when a clearly beaten and battered Maul appears years later in Star Wars: Rebels before Ezra Bridger and attempts to train him as his new Padawan.

The big question, however, is: if Maul truly intends to make Devon his Padawan, could that mean an ignominious end for Devon’s reptilian friend? Maul may hate the Empire, but he still follows the teachings of the Sith, and the Rule of Two states that there can only be one master and one padavan.

The eleventh brother and Morocco

Fans first encountered the Eleventh brother in the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi episode “Resolve,” where the crow-like Inquisitor was killed by Ahsoka Tano. As is typical for the Star Wars universe, the Eleventh Brother’s death was not the end of his story. He later reappeared in Star Wars: Tales of the Empire.

The Eleventh Brother isn’t the only one to make a brief appearance in the latest trailer. Marrok also appears, seemingly about to clash with Captain Brander Lawson, a disgruntled police officer on Janix who wants to capture Maul. Like the Eleventh Brother, Marrok is an Inquisitor who met a gruesome end at the hands of Ahsoka Tano. Unlike the Eleventh Brother, however, Marrok survived the fall of the Empire, meaning he’ll be a constant thorn in the side of Maul and his followers in this animated adventure.

The true identities of the Eleventh Brother and Marrok have not yet been revealed, but since Maul: Shadow Lord is released so soon after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and both the Eleventh Brother and Marrok are presumably former members of the Jedi Order, Maul: Shadow Lord may reveal some important details.

Reunion of the Night Brothers

Maul isn’t just uniting criminals; it seems he’s also reconnecting with other Zabrak warriors. The trailer shows a group of Zabrak fighters, armed with rocket launchers and blasters, aiming and firing at Imperial troops. These could simply be the criminal Zabrak with whom Maul collaborated during his visit to Janix. However, it’s also possible that these troops consist of Nightbrothers—male Zabrak warriors who lived under the rule of the Nightsister clans.

Raised as a Nightbrother under Mother Talzin, Maul understands better than most how badly the Nightbrothers are treated. With the Nightsisters nearly wiped out, only a few Nightbrothers and Nightsisters remain. We know that Maul will visit Dathomir sometime during the Imperial era, but the exact timing is unknown. Should Maul visit Dathomir during his time on Janix, his Nightbrothers could become the forces he needs to build his criminal empire.

Maul: Shadow Lord will be streamed on Disney Plus starting April 6th.
