KPop Demon Hunters 2 is finally official: “This is just the beginning”
KPop Demon Hunters 2 is officially in development, as Netflix confirmed today. The streaming service announced a multi-year collaboration with KPop Demon Hunters directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who will co-write and direct the film. With this announcement, Netflix heralded the next chapter for the three demon hunters Rumi, Mira, and Zoey.
“As a Korean filmmaker, I am incredibly proud that audiences want to see more of this Korean story and our Korean characters,” Kang said in a statement. “This world we have created has so much more to offer, and I look forward to showing it to you. This is just the beginning.”
“These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home,” said Appelhans. “We look forward to writing their next chapter, challenging them and watching their development – and continuing to explore the boundaries of how music, animation and story can work together.”
The chairman of Netflix Film, Dan Lin, added: “There is so much more to tell, and we can’t wait to show fans everywhere more of Huntr/x.”
KPop Demon Hunters 2 had been circulating in the rumor mill for months.
The plans for KPop Demon Hunters 2 were no secret. Hollywood trade magazines had been reporting for months that Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation planned a sequel shortly after the film’s release last summer, and Sony immediately entered into negotiations to bring Kang and Appelhans on board for KPop Demon Hunters 2.
Almost everyone with even a passing familiarity with pop culture knew a sequel was coming. KPop Demon Hunters is the most successful Netflix film of all time, racking up 500 million views since its debut in June 2025. Netflix, Sony, and toy manufacturers have been frantically trying to capitalize on this success ever since. Even a Fortnite crossover happened at the end of last year.
Producing a sequel to a pop culture phenomenon that also spawned a chart-topping soundtrack, received two Oscar nominations, won a Grammy, and captivated children, teenagers, and adults worldwide will be no easy task. However, Kang, Applehans, and their team seem to have enough time to meet the challenge. A release date for KPop Demon Hunters 2 has not yet been set, but it looks like it won’t be released until 2029 at the earliest.
