Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold battery explodes in durability test
The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which finally went on sale last week after being unveiled in August, was subjected to extreme durability testing. The test results suggest that the foldable device may not be as durable as Google claims.
YouTuber Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything subjected the Pixel 10 Pro Fold to his usual durability tests. Although the foldable device struggled in several tests, it was the bend test that ultimately killed the smartphone.
Although the hinge held firmly, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold broke along the antenna lines. Last year’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold also had the same vulnerabilities. What followed the break, however, was unexpected.
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold suffers a short circuit
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s battery exploded, releasing a cloud of smoke. Although the YouTuber performs the same bending test on every foldable phone, this is the first time in over 10 years that a battery has exploded during such a test.
It’s worth noting that this was an extreme durability test, and such a battery explosion is highly unlikely under normal use. The reason was that the individual layers of the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s Li-ion battery were subjected to so much pressure during the bending test that they touched each other. The result was a short circuit, which caused the entire energy of the larger battery cell of the Google phone to be discharged in one fell swoop.
