Product overview Google Pixel 6 Pro

With the Google Pixel 6 Pro, the Californians launched their first true [device] in 2021. High-end smartphone A new device was unveiled, aiming to compete with Apple and Samsung in both design and technology. It not only boasts a new design but also features Google’s own Tensor processor, a high-quality LTPO OLED display, an improved triple camera with a telephoto lens, and numerous AI functions.

  • Excellent main camera with a true telephoto lens
  • High-resolution, brilliant 120 Hz OLED
  • Modern, eye-catching design
  • Excellent workmanship & IP68 certification
  • Smart AI features thanks to Tensor SoC
  • Pure Android + long update support (5 years)

Design

The Google Pixel 6 Pro differs significantly from previous Google smartphones. The most striking design choice is the horizontal camera bar on the back – the so-called “camera bar.” It runs across the entire width of the device and gives it a futuristic, distinctive look.

The front is dominated by a curved display that curves slightly towards the edges. The bezels are narrow, and the punch-hole for the front camera is centrally located. With its glossy glass back, rounded edges, and aluminum frame, the Pixel 6 Pro looks modern and premium. It’s available in elegant colors such as Stormy Black, Cloudy White, and Sorta Sunny.

Build quality

The build quality is excellent. The combination of Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and back, along with a high-quality aluminum frame, ensures stability and a premium feel. The device sits comfortably in the hand, despite being quite heavy at 210 grams and also rather large at 163.9 × 75.9 × 8.9 mm.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro is IP68-rated for water and dust resistance. However, the back can feel a bit slippery, so a case is recommended. Overall, Google delivers build quality on par with other premium devices.

Display

The Google Pixel 6 Pro features a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED display with a QHD+ resolution (3120 x 1440 pixels) and a 120Hz variable refresh rate. Thanks to LTPO technology, the refresh rate can dynamically adjust between 10 and 120Hz, saving energy while enabling smooth animations.

The display is razor-sharp, the colors are vibrant, and the contrasts are deep. The maximum brightness is high enough for outdoor use, although top-of-the-line Samsung models (e.g., the S22 Ultra) are slightly brighter. The optical fingerprint sensor in the display was sluggish at launch but has been improved via updates – it’s now usable, but not the fastest.

Performance

The Google Pixel 6 Pro features the search engine giant’s first in-house chip: the Google Tensor. Developed in collaboration with Samsung, it is optimized for AI and machine learning processes, not primarily for benchmark performance.

In everyday use, the Pixel 6 Pro delivers smooth performance: apps launch quickly, multitasking works seamlessly, and animations run fluidly. In direct comparison to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Apple’s A15 Bionic, the Tensor chip is slightly less powerful in raw performance, but more than sufficient for all everyday and multimedia applications.

The device is particularly strong in:

  • Live translations

  • Speech recognition

  • Photo editing with AI

  • Adaptive battery and display functions

Battery

The battery has a capacity of 5,003 mAh – generously sized for a device of this size. In practice, this translates to a good runtime of 1 to 1.5 days, depending on usage. Thanks to the variable display, energy can be saved when the device is not in use.

Charging is done via cable at up to 30 watts (USB-C) and wirelessly at 23 watts using the Pixel Stand 2 (sold separately). Unfortunately, the charging process is quite long: about 1 hour and 45 minutes for a full charge – the competition is more efficient here. A charger is also not included in the box.

Camera

The Google Pixel 6 Pro features a triple camera, which is significantly expanded compared to the regular Pixel 6:

  • 50 MP main camera (f/1.85, OIS, Quad Bayer)

  • 12 MP ultra wide-angle camera (f/2.2, 114°)

  • 48 MP telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom (f/3.5, OIS)

The image quality is excellent – especially the main camera delivers detailed, high-contrast, and natural-looking shots, both day and night. Thanks to Google’s image processing, portraits, HDR scenes, and night shots are outstanding.

The telephoto lens offers true optical zoom and, combined with digital zoom, delivers up to 20x “Super Res Zoom,” producing surprisingly usable results. The ultrawide camera is solid, but not on par with the main camera.

The 11.1 MP front camera supports 4K video and delivers good selfies with natural color reproduction. Videos can be recorded at up to 4K/60fps and are excellently stabilized.

Conclusion

The Google Pixel 6 Pro is a powerful flagship with plenty of character. It combines a superb display, strong software features, long-term update support, and one of the best smartphone cameras on the market – including true telephoto zoom. Thanks to Google’s own Tensor chip, the device shows where Android smartphones can go: more intelligence, less focus on numbers.

Minor weaknesses such as the slightly slower charging speed, the high weight and the fingerprint sensor, which could be improved, slightly mar the overall impression, but do not change the fact that the Pixel 6 Pro is among the best Android devices of its generation – especially for those who value photography, software quality and the Google ecosystem.
