China Mobile is currently pushing hard to upgrade its mobile network to the 5G Advanced standard (also known as 5.5G and 5G-A). The Oppo Find X7 series will be the first to connect with an update this month. Vivo has also already confirmed that the X Fold 3 and X100 series are about to receive an OTA update for 5.5G support. Now a third company is joining the next generation, as Xiaomi just demonstrated record-breaking speeds with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

The Xiaomi smartphone reached a speed of 5,132 Mbit/s, surpassing the previous speed record over a 5G connection. This test was a collaboration between China Mobile, ZTE (which supplies China Mobile with networking equipment) and Qualcomm (which developed the Snapdragon X75 modem in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra).

The mobile operator wants to expand the new network in over 300 cities in China. 20 new 5.5G-capable smartphones are expected this year. Adoption should grow quickly – China Mobile expects 20 million 5.5G subscribers per year. For reference, the country reached 850 million 5G subscribers in February. 5G Advanced promises a tenfold increase in network capacity, as well as downlink speeds of up to 10 Gbps and uplink speeds of up to 1 Gbps. The additional capacity will also allow 100 billion IoT devices to join the network. The latency is also lower than with current 5G networks.
