Microsoft has released an updated version of the Xbox app for PC that brings several changes and improvements. One of the new additions is Compact Mode, which Microsoft designed specifically for the new wave of handheld gaming PCs. The compact mode contains a fold-out side menu that can be minimized to the icons. This frees up much-needed display space on the small screens.
Unfortunately, when you activate the Xbox app for PC, you first lose direct access to the installed games via the sidebar. Therefore, you have to access it from the “My Library” section. Also, the option to activate compact mode is a bit hidden. You can find it in the drop-down menu, which is activated by clicking on the profile icon in the top left menu. There is no other button anywhere on the display.
Microsoft is also in discussions with manufacturers like Asus to enable the new Compact Mode by default on handheld consoles like the ROG Ally. Other changes to the Xbox app for PC include updates to the notification area, where you can now only view unread notifications instead of all notifications.
A new gaming service repair tool is also on board. The app can troubleshoot gaming service issues or find missing content when launching the Microsoft Xbox app. The updated Xbox app for PC is now available to download from the Microsoft Store. It is available for both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
