WhatsApp finally adds support for HD photos and videos. The rollout for Android and iOS has already started, but may take a few weeks. As for photos, “HD” in this case means the full resolution of the image. There is also a “Standard” option for less storage space and faster transmission, which halves the resolution. The photos are still compressed, even at full resolution.

A new HD icon lets you choose between the two quality options. All images continue to be end-to-end encrypted, whether HD or SD.
You can also now share HD videos with a resolution of 720p instead of 480p. To do this, select the video or videos you want to share, tap the new HD button at the top of the screen, and then choose between Standard or HD quality. The associated file sizes are also conveniently displayed here. HD videos are also protected by end-to-end encryption.
