Apple suppliers will begin production of two new fourth-generation AirPods models in May, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Based on this time frame, he expects the Apple AirPods 4 to release in September or October.

Gurman assumes that both AirPods 4 models will have a new design with a better fit. There will also be an update in terms of sound quality and an updated charging case with a USB-C port. The high-end models will also have active noise cancellation and a speaker in the charging case. The latter can play a sound for location tracking if the Apple headphones are connected to the “Find My” network.

Apple plans to discontinue the AirPods 2 and third-generation AirPods after the launch of the two fourth-generation models. Now you would of course think that Apple AirPods Pro 4 are about to be launched. But we’re still waiting for the AirPods Pro 3 and Gurman doesn’t expect the launch until next year at the earliest.

At least the current models with iOS 18 should get a new hearing aid mode. Additionally, he added that Apple is also working on a hearing test feature for the AirPods.
