Threads Mute Filter

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced on Threads that the company is expanding its mute filters to apply to more parts of the app than before. The function called “Hidden Words” previously only applied to posts that were addressed to yourself. This caused certain words or phrases to be filtered and no longer appear in your answers. From now on, the filter also works in the timeline, search, profiles and in replies that you see under other posts.

“Hidden Words” is basically just a normal mute filter. Add a word, phrase, or even an emoji to the list and Threads will hide any post that contains those words. Aside from letting you manage a custom list, the app also automatically filters out posts with specific words. Although you can disable this behavior in Settings.

Mosseri also revealed that the company is working on additional moderation tools in Threads. Users would soon be able to choose who can quote them. This could go a long way toward reducing unwanted attention and harassment. You could also mute your post notifications so that you can continue to receive notifications other than those from the posts you select.

The advanced “Hidden Words” feature is already available to all users. The other features are in testing and may only be accessible to select users for now.
