Tecno today unveiled the latest product from its R&D department – the rollable smartphone concept Tecno Phantom Ultimate. It expands laterally, enlarging the display from 6.55 inches to 7.11 inches in 1.2 to 1.3 seconds. This second concept device from Tecno is very similar to the first one called Phantom V Fold but without the fold out part.
The Tecno Phantom Ultimate features a single motor that expands the rollable at the touch of a button and sits on the top right of the phone. When rolled up, it is a simple 6.55-inch smartphone. In this state, the additional display part is on the back and serves as an always-on display.
As for the specs, the display is a 7.11-inch on-cell LTPO AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2296 x 1596 pixels and a pixel density of 388ppi. According to Tecno, it covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color space.
The Phantom Ultimate is 9.93mm thick at the base and, according to Tecno, can easily be held with one hand. The smartphone has both a protective glass for the flexible area and a structured back for better grip.
The bad news is that the Phantom Ultimate is currently just a concept. And that there is currently no evidence that this could change in the foreseeable future. Obviously, manufacturers still have to solve some technical challenges before rollable phones are ready for the mass market. How long this will take is currently not foreseeable.
