Sony is currently planning a big Xperia launch event for May 17th, so the leaks are slowly increasing. Like today, when tempered glass lens protectors for the upcoming Sony Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI appeared on the Japanese marketplace Rakuten. The remarkable thing is that both protective films are larger than their predecessors and have larger openings. The assumption is that Sony will install larger camera sensors underneath.

The lens protector for the Sony Xperia 1 VI is 1.5 x 5.2 cm compared to 1.3 x 4.9 cm for the Xperia 1 V. The Xperia 10 VI measures 1.6 x 3.3 cm compared to an area of 1 x 3.2 cm for its predecessor, the Xperia 10 V. However, it is possible that these larger camera islands serve purely aesthetic purposes and the sensors they contain remain unchanged.

According to a rumor from earlier this month, the Sony Xperia 1 VI will use the same camera sensors as its predecessor. That would mean a 24mm, 48-megapixel main camera with an f/1.9 aperture and a 1/1.35-inch sensor. The predecessor also has a 16 mm-12 megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/2.2 and a 1/2.5 inch sensor. It also features an 85-125 mm-12 megapixel telephoto lens (1/3.5 inch sensor and continuous zoom).

Sony will most likely bring the Xperia 1 VI onto the market with revised camera software. Recently leaked renders showed an almost identical design to the Xperia 1 V. However, the 6.5-inch display gets a new aspect ratio as Sony finally moves away from the 21:9 format of the previous models. According to rumors, Sony will also forgo 4K resolution on its flagship. The Sony smartphone should launch with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and up to 16GB of RAM.

Sony Xperia 1 VI price

One piece of the puzzle that hasn’t been mentioned yet is the price of the Sony Xperia 1 VI. That changed today. According to another new leak from Japan, the flagship in Taiwan will cost slightly less than its predecessor. Sony is reportedly asking 39,900 TWD (1,143 €/$1,224) instead of 41,990 TWD (1,204 €/1,288 $).

That’s certainly not a huge price cut, but it’s still better than the usual price increases. If the rumor is true, we still have to wait and see whether the Xperia 1 VI will be cheaper in countries other than Taiwan. On the other hand, we are pleased that rumors suggest that the price will not rise any higher than last year’s Xperia 1 V.
