Sony releases high-end Bluetooth headphones and earphones about every two years. In terms of headphones, the Sony WH-1000XM5 have already replaced the Sony WH-1000XM4. The change is still pending for the earphones. However, it shouldn’t be long before the Sony WF-1000XM5 will replace the WF-1000XM4 predecessors from 2021. This is supported by a new FCC certification. According to the accompanying images, the new models will be slightly more compact than their predecessors. This should be welcomed by fans of the brand, as the dimensions were the only real criticism of the WF-1000XM4.

Inside the charging case you can see that the Sony WF-1000XM5 are now charged via two pins instead of three. Like the WF-1000XM4, the case material seems to be made of matte plastic. While the images don’t indicate any scale, it seems like the new Sony earbuds could get a little more compact than their predecessors.
The charging case is designed for 5 volts and 230 mAh, which is more than the 5 volts and 140 mAh of the XM4. This may also allow the buds to charge faster. The LED has moved from the inside of the case to the front. Wireless charging is of course also available.
The Sony WF-1000XM5 are made in China, just like Sony’s LinkBuds S. Now that the first certifications and leaks have appeared, the market launch should not be long in coming.
