Innovating and reinventing the wheel every year in the smartphone space has never been an easy task. You would actually think that things should be easier with a new type of device like foldables. According to a new tip, that doesn’t seem to be the case with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6. Redesigning the internal components and complex hinge mechanisms of a modern foldable smartphone is arguably still a difficult task.

According to industry insider Ice Universe, we also need to lower our expectations for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6’s main camera. Apparently Samsung will reuse the in-house 50 megapixel GN3 sensor (1/1.56 inch, 1.0 µm) for the main camera. Another reliable tipster put forward the same theory earlier this month.

According to Revegnus, a main camera update will not come until the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 starts in 2025. That would be somewhat disappointing, because the GN3 sensor was already used in both the current Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold4. You have to go all the way back to the Galaxy Z Fold3 to find another main camera – the 12-megapixel Sony IMX555.

According to other credible reports from The Elec, Samsung could be trying to make the Galaxy Z Fold6 thinner. The competition from Huawei and Xiaomi is also far ahead of Samsung here. According to the report in question, Samsung might take apart the Huawei Mate X5 foldable to see how Huawei was able to juggle both a thinner profile and a larger internal battery.

For comparison: The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 measures 6.1 mm when unfolded and 13.4 mm when folded. The Huawei Mate X5, on the other hand, reaches 5.3 mm when unfolded and 11.1 mm when folded. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is even thinner at 5.3 mm when unfolded and 10.9 mm when folded. The new OnePlus Open measures 5.8 mm when unfolded and 11.7 mm when folded. In addition, all three foldables come with flagship cameras.
