Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5, as well as the Galaxy Tab S9 series and Galaxy Watch6 / Watch6 Classic at a major unpacked event today. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 comes with two major improvements – the flex hinge and the flex window. They address the two biggest criticisms of the Galaxy Z Flip4 – the gap when you close it and the small cover display. This also makes it thinner. The thickest part now measures 15.1mm, 2mm less than the Z Flip4. When open, the new Flip is 6.9mm thick, 165.1mm high and 71.9mm wide.

The weight has remained the same at 187 grams. In addition to Armor Aluminum, Samsung also uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the cover display and the back. The housing is IPX8-certified and can withstand half an hour in water up to 1 meter deep. The new flex hinge design also features a dual rail structure that helps cushion external impacts.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5’s new Flex Window is 3.78 times larger than the Z Flip4’s display. As expected, you can use various widgets such as weather, music or stocks and change settings. You can even answer incoming messages on a full QWERTY keyboard or pull out the Samsung Wallet and access all payment services, QR codes and coupons stored there. The multi-widget view lets you quickly glance at widgets and switch between them with familiar pinch-to-zoom gestures.
3.4 inch flex window
The Flex Window also serves as a large viewfinder for selfies with the main cameras or as a mirror for friends via dual preview while you are taking pictures yourself. Super Steady stabilization is also back on board. Just like auto framing when using the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 as a tripod and moving in front of the camera.

The 6.7-inch main display resolves FHD+ (22:9) with an adaptive refresh rate of 1-120 Hz. The Flex display has a diagonal of 3.4 inches and a resolution of 720 x 748 pixels (306 ppi), but only runs at 60 Hz. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset, which can also be found in the Galaxy S23 series. There is also 8 GB of RAM and 256 or 512 GB of storage.
The camera setup is unchanged from last year. The 12 megapixel main camera has a 1/1.76 inch sensor with huge 1.8 µm pixels and Dual Pixel AF. The f/1.8 lens is optically stabilized. There’s also a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 lens, 1.12 µm pixels and a 123-degree field of view. The selfie camera resolves 10 megapixels through an 85-degree lens with an aperture of f/2.2 and 1.22 µm pixels.
There were no obvious changes to the battery. It still has a capacity of 3,700 mAh and still supports wired charging at 25 watts (50% in about half an hour) and wireless charging at 15 watts. The fingerprint sensor is installed on the side. There is also a card slot for a single Nano SIM. If you need a second line, you can also use an eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 prices
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 is available for pre-order today, with open sale starting August 11. The bad news is that Samsung has dropped the cheapest model with 128GB of storage. The good news is that the other two models have gotten a little cheaper. The 256GB variant costs €1,199 / £1,050, while the 512GB variant goes for €1,319 / £1,150. However, those who pre-order get the 512 GB version for the price of the 256 GB model. The color options are mint, lavender, cream and graphite for retail sale, plus grey, blue, green and yellow exclusively via Samsung.com.
There is also a transparent gadget case, a flap eco-leather case, a flip suite case and a silicone case with a ring. The new Z generation also uses more recycled materials than its predecessors. This includes recycled pre-consumer glass and aluminium, as well as recycled post-consumer plastics derived from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. The box is made from 100% recycled paper.
