Google's Gemini Large Language Model (LLM) is coming to OnePlus and Oppo phones in its Ultra 1.0 version. But the question is when.

Google’s Gemini Large Language Model (LLM) will come to OnePlus and Oppo phones in the Ultra 1.0 version later this year. The two companies just announced this in person at Google’s Cloud Next 2024 conference. The Gemini LLM has several levels. The smallest is Nano, runs directly on the device and will soon be available on the Google Pixel 8 series. The most powerful version is called Ultra, runs in the Google Cloud and powers the Gemini Advanced chatbot.

Gemini Ultra understands highly complex tasks and contexts to provide useful answers. In addition to Gemini, OnePlus and Oppo smartphones also get selected Google Cloud AI functions, although it is unclear which ones. It’s also unclear how “Gemini Ultra coming to OnePlus and Oppo smartphones” differs from using a browser to access Google’s Gemini Advanced chatbot.

Hopefully more details will come to light in the next few weeks and months. Right now, this implementation, whatever it ultimately looks like, still feels relatively far away. Recently, OnePlus announced that its own version of Google’s Magic Eraser would be coming to some of its models. With this new announcement, Oppo and OnePlus seem ready to finally jump on the AI bandwagon.
