WhatsApp has a new chat history transfer feature. The feature greatly simplifies the process of transferring chats and files to a new device without using cloud backups. All you have to do is create a QR code on your old device that contains the backup. You scan this on the new device and chats and files are transferred locally via Wi-Fi Direct.

The new chat history recovery feature is currently only available to users who are registered for the WhatsApp beta. Also, so far you can only transfer chats and files from the same operating system – from Android to Android or from iOS to iOS. The new function can be found under Settings > Chats > Chat transfer, but as already mentioned so far only as a beta user or after the general rollout later.

According to WhatsApp parent company Meta, chat history data is only exchanged between the two devices. In addition, the transfer process itself is fully encrypted. The feature is also useful if you have accumulated very large backup files that exceed the size of the cloud storage. With the standard option via Google Drive, for example, 15 GB of storage space is available in the free version.
