New Sony Xperia 1 VI renders show changed aspect ratio

As previously rumored, the Sony Xperia 1 VI will be shorter and wider than its predecessor. Other than that, the design will be very similar.

Previously, it was rumored that the upcoming Sony Xperia 1 VI would have a very similar design to its predecessor. However, a different aspect ratio of the display is supposedly planned – less high, but slightly wider. There are also rumors that 4K resolution may be a thing of the past and that the cameras could be exactly the same as those on last year’s Xperia 1 V.

Today we can at least take a look at the Sony Xperia 1 VI in some leaked CAD renders. The source of these images claims that the next flagship smartphone will have a 6.5-inch display. As you can see, the headphone jack is still there, as is the dedicated camera shutter button on the right side.

The Xperia 1 VI is said to measure 161.9 x 74.5 x 8.4 mm, which would be less tall but wider than its predecessor’s 165 x 71 x 8.3 mm. As a result, the sixth generation would say goodbye to the 21:9 aspect ratio that characterized previous Xperia smartphones. Instead, Sony would choose to do what all other premium manufacturers do. Most current smartphones are in the 19:9 to 20:9 range, and that’s where the Xperia 1 VI will most likely end up.

As for 4K resolution, it has never caught on in the industry. If the rumors are true, Sony will forego another traditional feature. In fact, 4K resolution brings hardly any visible benefits in practice, other than increasing power consumption. However, it does not affect the sales figures.

It’s unclear when exactly Sony plans to make the Xperia 1 VI official. For reference, the Xperia 1 V was launched in May last year. Maybe Sony will stick to this launch date for the new model.
