A few years ago, Motorola introduced the Moto G 5G as a new entry-level option with 5G, then came the sequel in 2022 and now the new model is here. Also, this year’s Motorola Moto G Stylus hit the stage. Both phones have been slimmed down slightly, which lowers the price but also limits the range of functions.
Motorola Moto G 5G (2023)
The Motorola Moto G 5G (2023) features a sub-6GHz connection thanks to its Snapdragon 480+ chipset. Now, if you’re thinking that this isn’t particularly impressive compared to the 2022 model’s Dimensity 700 or even the 2020 model’s Snapdragon 750G, you’re right. For this, Motorola has significantly lowered the price to $250 (€227), while the 2022 model was launched for $400 (€364). Launch is in the US, with Canada set to follow later this year.

The Motorola Moto G 5G (2023) combines the Snapdragon 480+ chipset with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There is also a microSD slot that can hold cards with up to 1 TB of storage. Android 13 is used as the operating system. Like the 2022 model, the new model is also based on a 6.5-inch LCD display with a resolution of 1,600 x 720 pixels (20:9). This year, however, the display runs at 120Hz instead of 90Hz. The original 2020 Motorola smartphone had a 6.7-inch FHD+ display, but it wasn’t available in the US.

The Moto G 5G has a water-resistant design, is 8.4mm thick and weighs 189g. On the underside, next to the USB-C port, is a 3.5mm headphone jack. The battery has a capacity of 5,000 mAh and charges with 15 watts, and there are also stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. On the back, Motorola installs a 48-megapixel camera (f/1.7 aperture, 0.8 µm native pixels, 1.6 µm after binning) as well as a 2-megapixel macro camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The main camera can record 1080p videos at 30fps. Finally, there’s also an 8-megapixel selfie camera (f/2.0, 1.12µm) that also shoots 1080p video at 30fps.
Motorola Moto G Stylus (2023)
The Motorola Moto G Stylus (2023) is a 4G-only phone powered by a Helio G85 chipset. It also comes with 4GB of RAM, but only with 64GB of storage. However, you can also use microSD cards with up to 1 TB of storage here. It’s available in the US starting Friday (May 5) and is priced at $200. For comparison, the 2022 model cost $300 with 4/128GB, and there was no 4/64GB option. Start is also here with Android 13.

The predecessor had a large 6.8 inch display with FHD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 90 Hz. The new Motorola Moto G Stylus (2023) has a smaller 6.5 inch IPS LCD display with HD+ resolution, however, the same refresh rate of 90 Hz. Especially with a smartphone with a stylus, the larger the display, the better.
The water-resistant design is also on board here, as is the 5,000 mAh battery with 15 watt charging. On the underside, in addition to the USB-C port, there is also a 3.5mm headphone jack and stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. The fingerprint sensor is installed on the side.
The camera setup is led by a 50 megapixel wide camera with an f/1.8 aperture and smaller 0.64 µm pixels (1.28 µm after binning). The camera shoots 1080p videos at 30fps. There’s also a 2-megapixel macro camera on the back and an 8-megapixel selfie camera on the front, which also shoots 1080p videos at 30fps.
Motorola also today unveiled its new flagship for North America, the Motorola Edge+ (2023).
