Microsoft wants to revolutionize Bing search with OpenAI’s ChatGPT

In the fight against Google, Microsoft wants to integrate the AI tool ChatGPT from developer OpenAI into its own search engine Bing.

Microsoft has come up with a new, innovative plan to finally take market share from Google, which has been the world’s dominant search engine for years. Based on a cooperation started in 2020, the Americans want to integrate the AI tool ChatGPT from developer OpenAI into their own search engine Bing.

According to two anonymous tipsters, Microsoft has developed new Bing algorithms for this purpose. In combination with ChatGPT, these form an artificial intelligence system that can react naturally and fluently to search queries. The chatbot developed by the American company OpenAI has attracted a lot of press in recent months. It offers thorough and accurate answers to millions of search queries while maintaining a very high working speed.

Bing Search powered by AI: Launch in March 2023

In combination with the Bing search, a significantly different interface should be used. Rather than displaying a list of links, you will no doubt be able to communicate with Bing. ChatGPT on the other hand would benefit from Microsoft’s vast database. This is exactly where there is still some catching up to do: If you search for “Apple iPhone 14” on ChatGPT, for example, you get the following result:

“I’m sorry, but I don’t have information about the iPhone 14 as it hasn’t been released yet. I can only provide information about products that are currently available or have been released in the past. Is there anything else I can help you with?”

An interface could link ChatGPT to billions of pieces of information that the Bing bot finds on the internet every day. At the start, the chatbot would be integrated into Bing as an optional feature. The basic functionality of Bing would be preserved accordingly. Microsoft is rumored to be launching this updated version of Bing by the end of March 2023.

The Redmond-based investors would also be happy about this, since Microsoft gave OpenAI a billion US dollars in 2019. Another prominent investor in the platform is PayPal, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk. The original goal was to develop an artificial general intelligence (AGI) that works similar to the human brain. OpenAI has since been able to use the information provided by Microsoft’s cloud servers to train the OpenGPT AI.

A year later, Microsoft received a license to use GPT-3 only. GPT-3 is the speech processing engine that powers ChatGPT. Founded by Bill Gates, the company first built an API (interface) to its Azure cloud platform to incentivize software designers to build AI-based solutions.

Secret weapon against Google?

Google now controls more than 90% of the global search engine market, while Bing only receives between 2.5 and 5% of all online searches, depending on the market. On mobile devices, Google is even more dominant with a market share of over 95%. In the face of this dominance, Bing is struggling to survive. On computers, the market share is less than 9%, on smartphones Bing does not seem to take place at all.

AI images from the Dall E engine

In addition to ChatGPT, when it comes to AI, there are also Stable Diffusion and Dall-E (part of OpenAI), two platforms that use artificial intelligence to create images from text. And Google itself now also seems to have woken up from its lethargy. Instead of using an existing platform, Mountain View wants to develop its own projects related to artificial intelligence. The company hopes to offer unique solutions as early as May 2023. Internal documents have already shown that Google sees AI platforms as a threat to its core business, which is search engines. These account for more than 90% of the sales of the parent company Alphabet.

ChatGPT: Start as a chatbot

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) as a chatbot in November 2022. It is based on OpenAI’s GPT 3.5 family of large language models and has since been enhanced with supervised and reinforcement learning methods. On November 30, 2022 ChatGPT was presented as a prototype. The tool quickly became popular for its in-depth answers on a variety of topics. The inconsistent factual correctness was repeatedly criticized as a major error.

While mimicking human conversations is a chatbot’s main purpose, the press has also praised ChatGPT for its improvisational skills. These include his ability to create and debug computer programs, compose music, and write television plays, fairy tales, and student essays. The bot can also answer test questions, sometimes at a level above the norm for human test takers. You can even generate the 10 main questions for an existing text and you have the potential next class test / exam / test on any topic in your hand.

ChatGPT features

  • ChatGPT can understand and respond to natural language.
  • The technology uses deep learning to produce human-like text that can respond to anything from stories, math solutions, to theoretical essays.
  • ChatGPT can remember previous comments in a conversation and play them back to the user.
  • The AI can provide a detailed answer to historical arguments about poems on any topic.
  • Compared to its predecessor InstructGPT, ChatGPT tries to reduce hurtful answers to users’ questions.
  • ChatGPT is designed to learn from human feedback.
  • ChatGPT can suggest anything – how to celebrate a birthday party and how to write an essay.
