Instagram introduced Threads back in October 2019 as a standalone app for chatting with close Instagram friends. However, the app is currently no longer available because Meta launched a new Threads app last week as a Twitter competitor. The app has been available in over 100 countries since launch, including the US and UK, though not in Europe.

Unfortunately, you can’t even use threads in Europe via VPN as a workaround. Because as Meta has now confirmed, European VPN users of threads are blocked. This results in profiles and content not loading and notifications not working.
“Threads is currently unavailable in most European countries and we have taken further measures to prevent people from those countries accessing threads. Europe continues to be a very important market for Meta and we hope to be able to bring Threads to more countries in the future.”

Threads already had 30 million users within the first 24 hours and is now at 100 million users a week after launch. Expanding to European countries would further increase this number greatly.
However, there is a possibility that this will not happen in the foreseeable future. Because with the imminent passage of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the rules of the game will change again.
