Mark Zuckerberg on Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro

Zuckerberg can now take a deep breath with the Meta Quest 3, but was certainly nervous until the announcement of the Apple Vision Pro.

Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t seem impressed with Apple’s launch of the Vision Pro headset. In a company-wide meeting with Meta employees, the CEO said that Apple’s device does not represent any major technological breakthroughs. At least none that Meta hasn’t “already explored”. Also, Apple’s vision for how people will use the headset is “not the one that I want.” He also pointed out that the upcoming Meta Quest 3 headset will be significantly cheaper at $499 (€464) compared to the $3,499 (€3,250) price tag of the Vision Pro. This gives Meta the opportunity to reach a much broader user base.

“I think that their announcement really showcases the difference in the values and the vision that our companies bring to this in a way that I think is really important,” Zuckerberg told employees gathered at the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, for the first all-hands meeting since 2020. Zuckerberg said the Quest is about “people interacting in new ways and feeling closer.” It’s also “about being active and doing things.”

“By contrast, every demo that they showed was a person sitting on a couch by themself” he said of Apple’s WWDC keynote earlier this week. “I mean, that could be the vision of the future of computing, but like, it’s not the one that I want.”

Meta Quest 3 won’t be out until fall

Zuckerberg can breathe easy for now, but Meta was certainly nervous until Apple’s announcement. The Quest 3 was only announced a few days earlier, although the device won’t ship until the fall. Meta has long sought to position itself as a leader in virtual and augmented reality, investing billions of dollars in research and marketing each year. That alone arouses some uneasiness among investors, which is likely to increase significantly with the introduction of Apple’s first headset.

Meta was relatively successful early on in the areas of VR gaming and fitness. On the other hand, the high-end and general computer market, which Apple also has its sights on, has not yet been cracked. Accordingly, last year’s Quest Pro headset is also considered a financial flop. That should change with the much cheaper Meta Quest 3.
