Leica is of course best known for its cameras, which are also the focus of the Leitz Phone 3 and its 1-inch camera.

Leica is of course best known for its cameras, and recently also for collaborations with smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei and Xiaomi. The company also produces mechanical watches and smartphones. Not just co-branded devices, but exclusively Leica branded devices. The Leica Leitz Phone 1 came onto the market exclusively in Japan in 2021, the Leitz Phone 2 in 2022. By the way, the name comes from Leica founder Ernst Leitz. But the name Leica itself is made up of “Lei” from Leitz and “ca” for “camera”.

Today the Leitz Phone 3 officially started, once again only for Japan. It closely resembles a Leica camera, which is hardly surprising. As for the cameras themselves, the main camera is a 1-inch camera with 47.2 megapixels, just like the Leitz Phone 2. This is equipped with a 19 mm f/1.9 lens. On the front there is a 12.6-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.3 aperture and a 78-degree field of view.

It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. The 6.6-inch IGZO OLED display refreshes at 240 Hz and delivers a resolution of 1,260 x 2,730 pixels and a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits. The Leitz Phone 3 has 12GB of RAM and 512GB of expandable storage, as well as a 5,000mAh battery. It runs Android 14.

In addition, protection classes IP65 and IP68 are on board for dust and water resistance. Sharp is responsible for production, which explains the restriction to the Japanese market. A nice gimmick is the Golden Hour widget, which alerts you an hour before sunset and after sunrise that you should quickly go out and take some spectacular pictures.

There is also another widget that shows images from the international Leica gallery taken with Leica cameras by real photographers. The Leica Perspective Control is also on board, which is celebrating its premiere on the Leitz Phone 3. This is a software feature that corrects the perspective of vertical lines as they appear when viewed. This was previously limited to Leica cameras. Finally, there are new Leitz Looks and Leica Tones.

The Leitz Phone 3 launches in Japan on April 19th and comes with a “lens cap” and a matching case.
