It only took 14 years, but Apple finally announced a native calculator app for the iPad today with iPadOS 18. And if you have an Apple Pencil handy, it can even create math notes. So you can write complicated equations and get solutions in real time. It even supports variables and updates results as you change inputs. All Math Notes features are supported in the Notes app too.

Speaking of which, Notes is getting SmartScript with iPadOS 18. That’s a neat feature that refines your handwriting using machine learning. It’s made more readable while still maintaining the handwritten style.

Apple is bringing a new floating tab bar – which sits at the top of your apps as a shortcut and turns into the sidebar. This will be available as an API for developers and will enable context menus in apps, easier navigation, and the ability to search documents.

The iOS 18 home screen and app personalization options and updated Photos app are also coming to iPads. Just like the Americans’ new AI solution called Apple Intelligence for iPads with M1 chipset or newer.

Apple’s new AI features include prioritizing notifications, the ability to summarize information, creating images, and an updated Siri assistant.

The developer beta of iPadOS 18 starts today, the public beta follows next month. The final version for Apple iPads will be released this fall.
