Apple’s upcoming new iPad Pro models with OLED displays are almost here. There have been a lot of rumors on the subject so far. Now 9to5Mac claims to have discovered tangible evidence of the new display technology in the iPadOS 17.5 firmware. Editors discovered four new iPad identifiers in the firmware – iPad16.3, iPad16.4, iPad16.5 and iPad16.6. These should be the typical two sizes, each with Wi-Fi only and with Wi-Fi and mobile communications.

The report goes on to say that the firmware suggests two things. On the one hand, that there will again be Apple iPad Pro tablets in sizes 11 inches and 12,9 inches and, on the other hand, that the display technology used is OLED. This report once again confirms previous rumors about new screens.

Apple has apparently delegated the production of the 12.9-inch OLED iPad Pro exclusively to LG and the 11-inch model jointly to LG and Samsung. Production of the panels has reportedly pushed the launch of the new iPad Pro far beyond what Apple had originally planned. It’s now been 18 months since the last Pros came onto the market.

In addition to the new iPad Pro models, iPadOS 17.5 also mentions a new Apple Pencil. The firmware references an Apple Pencil with squeeze gestures, which are further divided into “LongSqueeze” and “DoubleSqueeze”. Additionally, the firmware reveals that the new Apple Pencil will have Find My support. According to Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter, Apple will unveil the new iPad Pros, a redesigned Magic Keyboard, a new iPad Air (possibly in two sizes) and the Apple Pencil 3 in the second week of May.
