Apple announced the date of its next major keynote. The company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) begins on June 10. The conference is expected to start with the unveiling of iOS 18, which will be released to the public in the fall.

“We’re so excited to connect with developers from around the world for an extraordinary week of technology and community at WWDC24. WWDC is all about sharing new ideas and providing our amazing developers with innovative tools and resources to help them make something even more wonderful.”

Susan Prescott, Apple Vice President of Worldwide Developer Relations

iOS 18 with major AI update

A new report from Apple expert Mark Gurman of Bloomberg now quotes iOS 18 project staff. According to this, the new firmware will be “the most ambitions overhaul of the iPhone’s software in its history”. This is mainly because AI functions are finally on the “front and center” of iOS, says Gurman. Greg Joswiak, SVP Marketing at Apple, also tweeted about the upcoming conference. In the tweet above you can see that, according to Joswiak, WWDC 2024 will be “Absolutely Incredible!” – AI.

According to Gurman, Apple’s AI strategy will include “a slew of new proactive features to assist users in their daily lives”. However, Apple will not announce its own chatbot. Instead, it’s talking to Google and OpenAI to get them to provide generative AI services.

New home screen features

iOS 14 introduced Home Screen widgets and the App Library, the biggest improvement since iOS 7 switched to a flat visual style, or perhaps since iOS 4 introduced the addition of folders. Now another change is coming – according to Gurman, iOS 18 will also make the home screen more customizable.

There will be several changes in iOS 18, but a new feature allows gaps to be left in the icon grid. The symbols themselves still snap, but you can leave empty spaces, even entire rows and/or columns. There should also be other changes to the home screen, but Apple is keeping these under wraps.

Apple kept bringing major changes with new iOS versions. iOS 16 focused on lock screen personalization with customizable fonts and colors, as well as the addition of lock screen widgets. iOS 17 introduced StandBy mode, which turns iPhones into a smart display while on a docking station in landscape mode. Additionally, widgets became interactive.

Of course, these versions offer more than just the main changes to the appearance of the operating system. iOS 18 will also bring new features unrelated to the Home screen, including RCS support and generative AI for Siri. The look of the user interface could also change, with elements inspired by visionOS.
