WWDC 2024 starts today and these iPhones and iPads will get AI features called "Apple Intelligence" with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has revealed some details about the AI features in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. The tech giant is grouping all features under the umbrella of “Apple Intelligence,” which is a clever use of the acronym “AI.” Apple’s main focus will be on productivity and assistance with everyday tasks. Accordingly, Apple will integrate AI features into many system apps.

For example, AI can create summaries of web pages in Safari or offer detailed replies in Messages and Email. The latter also uses an AI-powered algorithm to sort emails and make your inbox much tidier. And Messages offers summaries for notifications.

The Photos app will have some advanced editing tools, including Apple’s version of the Smart Eraser tool in Google’s Photos app. Huge improvements to Siri and Xcode for code compilation are also planned in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. But these features probably won’t be released until next year. Generative AI generates emojis on the fly based on what you write. Users can then use emojis that are outside the Unicode Consortium’s emoji list.

Apple will reportedly rely on on-device and cloud computing for some of its AI features. Gurman also confirms OpenAI’s involvement in some of iOS 18’s AI tools. However, cloud computing can be a privacy violation. For this reason, Apple is tackling the problem in several ways. It uses a confidential computer design for data processing, does not create user profiles based on customer data, and informs the user how the data is used.

According to a second source with a pretty good track record on the matter, iOS 18 will be available for all iPhones that also received iOS 17. This means that the new firmware updates will be available from the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and above. The 2nd and 3rd generation iPhone SE will also get it.

Things aren’t looking quite so rosy for Apple iPads. Three tablets will have to do without the new software and will not get iPadOS 18. These are the first generation 10.5-inch iPad Pro and the second generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, as well as the sixth generation iPad.

iPadOS 18 will therefore come as an update for the iPad Pro from 2018. As well as for the iPad Air, Mini and the regular iPad from 2019. It should also be noted that the AI functions of the “Apple Intelligence” suite will probably only work on iPads that already run on Apple’s M-series chipsets.
