Huawei introduced the P60 Pro and the Mate X3 just a few weeks ago, and the foldable successor is already coming. The Huawei Mate X5 brings several technical upgrades while the design remains largely unchanged. Nothing has changed on the 7.85-inch LTPO OLED main display (2,224 x 2,496 pixels) and the 6.4-inch LTPO OLED cover display (1,080 x 2,504 pixels) either, both with Kunlun Glass protection. However, there is a new color called Phantom Purple in addition to the previous Feather White, Feather Black, Feather Gold and Green Mountain options that were also available on the Mate X3.

The design of the camera island on the back has been slightly changed, but the cameras themselves remain the same. In addition to the 50 megapixel main camera with an f/1.8 aperture, there is also a 13 megapixel f/2.2 ultra wide and a 12 megapixel f/3.4 periscope camera with 5x optical zoom on board.

The Huawei Mate X5 also has up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. However, just like with the new Mate 60 and Mate 60 Pro, there is no official information about the chipset used. Multiple reports from China suggest that this is the same Kirin 9000s processor that is reportedly working in the Mate 60 series. It should be a 5G chip based on SMIC’s 7nm process technology.

The other interesting detail is the new antenna design, which is intended to offer improved signal reception. Huawei’s Lingxi antenna features an AI algorithm that automatically selects the optimal network. The antennas around the device frame also feature dual-mode tuning technology for even better signal quality.
Huawei Mate X5 with larger battery
The Huawei Mate X5 also got a slightly larger 5,060 mAh battery. It charges via cable with 66 watts, wirelessly with 50 watts and reverse wirelessly with 7.5 watts. The operating system used is HarmonyOS 4 with the new air gesture control. In addition, the Huawei phone is IPX8 waterproof and supports two-way BeiDou satellite messaging in China.
The Huawei Mate X5 is already available for pre-sale via VMall. However, you can only pay a deposit, while Huawei is not yet revealing the price. The open sale should start on September 15th.
