5.5G is currently the latest thing to hit the mobile village, especially in China. Both Oppo, Xiaomi and vivo announced support for the technology on their flagship models last week. The next candidate is apparently Honor. As soon as the first 5.5G networks are active, the entire Honor Magic6 series should unlock 5.5G through a software update.

If you’re wondering what 5.5G is – 5.5G itself is just a marketing term that carriers will use to get you to upgrade your plan. Or just to brag about how advanced their networks are compared to their competitors. But “advanced” is the key word here, as 5.5G is also known as 5G-Advanced. The next iteration of mobile data technology, promising much faster data speeds and much lower latency as usual.

Of course, it is still based on 5G, as the name suggests, and the specifications still need to be finalized. That’s expected to happen this year, which is why smartphone manufacturers and operators are already saddling the horses. At the moment this has no impact on end users. But it’s of course good to know that current top models like the Honor Magic6 series will be future-proof enough to support 5.5G.

Peak data rates of 10 Gbit/s for downloads and 1 Gbit/s for uploads are currently definitely wishful thinking. As is the promised latency in the millisecond range. Still, there will definitely be improvements compared to what we have today. At the hardware level, any device with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or Dimensity 9300 chipset should be able to support 5.5G. Of course, it is up to the manufacturers to actually implement the technology.
