Google Android Wear OS Feature Drop

Google recently released its Wear OS 4 beta software. Samsung quickly followed suit with the first One UI 5 Watch Beta. The latter is already available for the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch5 to try out. Perhaps one of the most interesting new changes to Wear OS is the option to switch phones without having to reset the watch.

The current Wear OS 3.5 version and the corresponding One UI 4.5 Watch version from Samsung have so far required the smartwatch to be reset to the factory settings every time you change your smartphone. You can save the settings with the software. However, things like third-party clock faces and the icon layout in the app drawer are lost.

In the beta version of One UI 5 Watch this is no longer necessary. As soon as you start the transfer process to another phone, you will be asked if the Google account on the watch matches the one on the new smartphone.

However, it is important to note that the new feature was tested on a Galaxy Watch5. The fact that devices with Wear OS 4 also get them is therefore wishful thinking. But since this is core functionality, there’s a good chance everyone will get it.
