In addition to the Pixel Tablet and the Pixel 7a, the Google Pixel Fold, the company’s first foldable smartphone, finally took the stage at the I/O conference today. It measures 139.7 x 79.5 x 12.1 mm when folded, 139.7 x 158.7 x 5.8 mm when unfolded and weighs 283 g. It is IPX8 certified and therefore protected against water but not against dust.

The outer OLED display is 5.8 inches, protected by Gorilla Glass Victus and has a resolution of 1080 x 2092 pixels (17.4:9) at 120 Hz. HDR brightness reaches up to 1,200 nits and peak brightness reaches 1,550 nits.

The OLED main display has a diagonal of 7.6 inches, an aspect ratio of 6:5 and a resolution of 2,208 x 1,840 pixels. The refresh rate also hits a fast 120Hz. HDR brightness is up to 1,000 nits and peak brightness up to 1,450 nits. In addition to ultra-thin glass, Google also uses a protective plastic layer on the Pixel Fold, similar to Samsung on the Galaxy Z Fold4.

The hinge features “fluid friction across the full 180-degree range of motion to securely support different postures”. Like the Pixel 7a, the Google smartphone is powered by a Tensor G2 chipset with a Titan M2 security coprocessor. There’s also 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256 or 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

Google has installed three cameras on the back of the Pixel Fold. The 48 megapixel main camera is based on a 1/2 inch sensor with 0.8 μm pixels, an f/1.7 aperture and OIS. There is also a 10.8 megapixel ultra-wide with 1/3 inch and 1.25 μm pixels and aperture f/2.2 and a 10.8 megapixel telephoto with five times optical zoom. The sensor is 1/3.1-inch with 1.22μm pixels, an f/3.05 aperture and support for up to 20x Super Res Zoom. A 9.5 megapixel fixed focus camera with a pixel width of 1.22 μm and an f/2.2 aperture sits in the cover display. And the inner selfie camera also has a fixed focus. But it only resolves 8 megapixels through an f/2.0 aperture with the same pixel size.

The fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power button. As with the Pixel 7a, dual SIM support is only available via an eSIM. In addition to stereo speakers, there is also a 4,821 mAh battery on board that charges with 30 watts via USB-C. However, no charger is included in the scope of delivery. Android 13 takes over the os part. The Google Pixel Fold is available for pre-order in two colors: Porcelain (white) and Obsidian (black). Deliveries will start sometime next month. Those who pre-order get a free Google Pixel Watch.
