Today the first CAD renders of both the upcoming Google Pixel 9 Pro and its smaller, cheaper sibling have surfaced. According to the images, Google is planning a major redesign and also some hardware changes.

Google Pixel 9 Pro

Google released the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro in October 2023 and is now working hard on the Pixel 9 series. According to the new images, the Pixel 9 Pro will have a smaller, flat display and a redesigned camera module that no longer extends across the entire back.

The OLED display shrinks from 6.7 to 6.5 inches. However, the entire body will remain basically the same size, which means the edges will be slightly thicker. Google used a wide camera module, the so-called visor, in the last three generations of Pixel flagships. The individual lenses sit horizontally next to each other again.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro is 8.5 mm thick at the base, but grows to 12 mm at the thickest point, the cameras. Google used an aluminum frame for the Pixel 8 series. However, the two market leaders Apple and Samsung have switched to titanium with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max as well as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. A similar move by Google would therefore not be a big surprise.

One thing is immediately apparent. Unlike the Pixel 8, the Google Pixel 9 has three cameras on the back. And one of them is obviously based on a periscope zoom lens. This would be a significant upgrade for the base Pixel, as the periscope was previously reserved for the Pro model.

The other obvious change is the flat sides. Just like the Google Pixel 9 Pro or the other two top smartphones mentioned above, the era of curved glass seems to be over for now. The camera island also looks identical to its big brother. On the front you can see what appear to be exactly symmetrical display bezels and a single punchhole for the selfie camera.

According to the source of these renders, the Google Pixel 9 will measure 152.8 x 71.9 x 8.5mm. The camera module is 12 mm thick, just like the Pro. This makes it slightly higher, wider and slimmer than its predecessor. Nevertheless, the display should be slightly smaller at 6.1 inches compared to 6.2 inches on the Pixel 8.

Further technical data is currently missing, but the next Pixel smartphones are only expected to come onto the market in around eight months. Until then, as usual, there will likely be a flood of leaks.
