Samsung’s next generation foldable smartphones are just around the corner and the rumor mill is now in full swing. The latest leak is about the protection classes of the new foldables against water and dust. Apparently, Samsung was able to increase the protection of the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 to the IP58 protection class for the first time in foldables. The Koreans have not yet reached IP68, which most other flagship smartphones offer. Nevertheless, they are currently at least a generation ahead of the foldable competition.

The “5” in the IP58 rating deals with dust protection, while the “8” refers to water and moisture. That means there’s solid dust protection, even if it falls a little short of the regular flagship standard due to the moving parts related to the hinge. The hinge is an intricate and delicate element, so an IP58 rating is better than nothing and more than welcome.

The very first Samsung Galaxy Z Fold had no water ingress protection at all, while the Z Fold2 featured minor improvements to the hinge against dust build-up. The Z Fold3 and Z Fold4 were the first to have an official protection rating, but only against water.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5 will be unveiled in the last week of July

We also have news about the launch date of the new Samsung smartphones. Last week, Lee Young-hee, President of Samsung DX’s Global Marketing Center, confirmed that Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked event will be held in Seoul, South Korea. Young-hee did not reveal the venue, but Samsung has now issued a press release detailing the location. The COEX in Seoul’s Samseong-dong district, Gangnam, provides the appropriate setting.

Since the inaugural Unpacked event in Las Vegas in 2010, Samsung has hosted the global Unpacked event in key cities around the world including Barcelona, Berlin, London and New York. According to Samsung, Seoul has now been chosen “for its role in influencing global trends with its dynamic culture and innovation”. It also reflects Samsung’s strong belief in the foldable category.

According to Samsung, the Galaxy Unpacked event will take place in the last week of July, which fits in with previous rumors that the event would take place on July 26th.
