Apple macOS Sonoma

Alongside iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and watchOS 10, Apple has also announced macOS Sonoma, the latest version of its Mac operating system. macOS Sonoma is coming this fall and will include several new features. These include desktop widgets and Apple TV-like screensavers. There are also improvements to apps like Messages and Safari, a new Game Mode that prioritizes CPU and GPU performance for gaming, and more.

The first feature that Apple detailed were new interactive widgets that can now be placed directly on the desktop. The widgets blend seamlessly into the desktop wallpaper. And with Continuity, you can use the same widgets from your iPhone on your Mac. There are also advanced video conferencing features, including presenter overlay, so you can present yourself in front of the content you’re sharing. Reactions allow users to share how they are feeling within a video session. Additionally, screen sharing has been improved with a simplified process.

As is usual with macOS updates, Apple’s Safari browser also receives various new features as part of Sonoma. There is an update for Private Browsing that offers better protection from trackers and people. Profiles in Safari provide a way to separate browsing by topic, e.g. one for work and one for private surfing. In addition, there is also a new way to create web apps that provide quick access to your favorite websites.

macOS Sonoma with Game Mode

There are also new screensavers showing slow motion videos from different locations around the world. You can switch between landscape, earth, underwater or city view themes, similar to tvOS. For gamers, macOS Sonoma has a new game mode that offers an optimized gaming experience with smoother and more consistent frame rates. Game mode drastically reduces audio latency on AirPods, as well as input latency on game controllers. The whole thing works with every game on the Mac and MacBook.

The macOS Sonoma beta is available now through the Apple Developer Program. The first public beta will start next month, while the final version is expected to arrive in fall.
