Apple has been working on its own 5G modem for some time, but has not yet brought an iPhone with its own 5G chip onto the market. The brand currently still relies on Qualcomm. Well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has now confirmed previous reports and claims that nothing will change in the next two years. Instead, the switch to in-house 5G chips will not take place until 2025 with the Apple iPhone 17.

This means that next year’s upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series will use Qualcomm’s 5G modems. The Apple iPhone 17 could then become the first iPhone in 2025 to use the 5G modem developed by Apple itself. The same could also apply to the iPhone SE 4. The SE is also rumored to launch in 2025 and will use Apple’s in-house 5G chip.

So far there are no technical details about Apple’s 5G modems. Therefore, it is unclear what improvements and advantages they will bring to iPhones over Qualcomm’s 5G chips.

There was a report earlier this year that Apple was also thinking about developing its own wireless chip for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity for the iPhones. The first iPhone to use Apple’s in-house wireless chip will hit the market in 2025. The tech giant is also reportedly considering combining the wireless and cellular chips to save production costs and improve power efficiency.
