The Apple iPhone 15 series arrives on September 12th, and along with the move to USB-C ports, the camera setup is likely to get the biggest update. Thanks to new insider information, there are now detailed technical data on these improved cameras.

Apple iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
The basic models will be switched to a 48 megapixel main camera this year. It’s reportedly not the same 48-megapixel chip as the current iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. Instead, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will get a new Sony sensor with a stacked design that’s said to bring benefits in low-light conditions .
Main camera: 48 MP, f/1.6
Ultra wide: 12 MP, f/2.4
Apple iPhone 15 Pro
The Apple iPhone 15 Pro retains the 48-megapixel main sensor of the current iPhone 14 Pro, but gets a new, better ultrawide camera. Despite the same hardware, the telecamera could also take better pictures thanks to better software.
Main camera: 48 MP, f/1.8, Sony IMX803 1/1.3 inch
Ultra wide: 13.4 MP, f/2.2
Telephoto camera: 12.7 MP, f/2.8
Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max
The Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature the same main and ultra-wide cameras as the Pro. However, it will be the first iPhone with a periscope zoom lens, which will zoom between 5x and 10x.
Main camera: 48 MP, f/1.8, Sony IMX803 1/1.3 inch
Ultra wide: 13.4 MP, f/2.2
Telephoto camera: 12.7 MP, f/2.8, 85 mm periscope lens, 1/1.9 inch
According to the leak, the new periscope zoom will bring an 85mm-equivalent lens with an f/2.8 aperture and a 1/1.9-inch sensor. That would bring the zoom up to about four times magnification. In addition, Apple could also offer digital zoom.
Analysts suspect that due to space constraints, Apple decided to make the periscope a Pro Max exclusive feature. The 15 Pro Max’s camera module will be significantly larger than that of the 15 Pro and 14 Pro Max. When the periscope moves into both the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max in 2024, the display sizes are expected to increase to 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches for additional build space.
