Huawei presents its next generation of flagship tablet-style smartphones – the Mate 90 RS is the top model, and there’s also a Mate 90 Pro Max. The new Huawei Mate 90 Pro and a base model are also part of the lineup. With their 6.75-inch displays, they are smaller than the RS and the Pro Max (which have 6.9-inch displays), but they also feature new, high-end technology developed by Huawei.

Huawei Mate 90 Pro

The Huawei Mate 90 Pro features a 6.75-inch LTPO OLED display with a 1280p+ resolution and a refresh rate of 1–120 Hz. This sounds similar to its predecessor, but the new model boasts a dual-layer OLED panel with an impressive peak brightness of 12,000 nits.

The smartphone itself consists of a sandwich construction: third-generation Kunlun glass protects the front, a metal frame is embedded in the middle, and the back is made of nylon fiber. It is IP68 certified, meaning it is waterproof up to 6 meters. Additionally, it has an IP69K rating for protection against water jets. The display remains functional even when wet, so you can use it without worry in the rain.

The Huawei Mate 90 Pro is powered by the Kirin 9035 chipset. Huawei is keeping hardware details under wraps, but states that the new chip is 20% faster than the one in its predecessor. The GPU supports hardware ray tracing and can calculate 31 million rays per second (a value that, to our knowledge, hasn’t changed since the Kirin 9030).

The smartphone is available with 12 GB or 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB of internal storage. It does not have a memory card slot, but it does support dual SIM and eSIM. Beidou satellite messaging is available, allowing users to send messages and photos.

Another improvement is the Huawei Mate 90 Pro’s 6,600 mAh battery, compared to last year’s Pro model’s 5,750 mAh. Huawei states that the smartphone can play videos for up to 41 hours on a single charge. The battery supports 100W SuperCharge (wired) and 50W SuperCharge wirelessly – the 80 Pro offered 80W wireless charging. Reverse charging is possible both wired (18W) and wirelessly.

The Huawei Mate 90 Pro’s camera is largely identical to that of the 80 Pro. The 50-megapixel main camera features an RYYB sensor and an optically stabilized lens with a switchable aperture of f/1.4 to f/4.0. The ultra-wide-angle camera has a 40-megapixel RYYB sensor and an aperture of f/2.2. Additionally, a color sensor is integrated on the back.

The telephoto lens of the Huawei Mate 90 Pro features a 50-megapixel sensor (RYYB) and a lens with 4x optical zoom, OIS and a bright aperture of f/2.1. It can be switched to macro mode and enables close-up shots from as little as 5 cm away.

Huawei retained the unusual triple punch-hole design for the selfie camera (13 MP, f/2.0 AF lens) and the 3D depth sensor module.

The Huawei Mate 90 Pro comes with Harmony OS 7. It allows you to share photos, videos, and other large files remotely and, if you’re nearby, offers a “tap to share” function. The smartphone detects whether you’re holding it in your left or right hand and automatically places the answer and reject buttons on the right side for incoming calls.

The Huawei Mate 90 Pro is now available in China on vmall. The base model with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage costs 7,000 CNY (approximately 1,040 USD / 790 GBP / 925 EUR / 100,500 ₹). This is 1,000 CNY more than the price of the Mate 80 Pro (also with 12 GB of RAM) last year. A price overview for the other storage configurations can be found below.

Huawei Mate 90

The Huawei Mate 90 is available from 6,000 CNY, placing it in the same price range as the former Mate 80 Pro. It is slightly less powerful and is driven by the Kirin 9030, which was also used in the old Pro model, while the standard model had the Kirin 9020. The Mate 90 promises 27% higher performance than its predecessor, but this figure refers to the standard model. The Kirin 9035 used in the Mate 90 Pro is 20% faster.

This time there is no 16GB RAM option, only 12GB. However, the standard model offers all available storage capacities: 256GB, 512GB and 1TB.

Huawei hasn’t specified sensor sizes, but the hardware appears to be nearly identical to that of the Mate 90 Pro. This includes the 50MP RYYB main sensor with an f/1.4-f/4.0 lens with OIS and the 40MP RYYB ultrawide sensor (f/2.2).

Only the telephoto camera differs noticeably: While it still features a 50MP RYYB sensor, its 4x zoom lens with f/2.2 optics and optical image stabilization (OIS) has a focal length of 88mm, whereas the telephoto module of the Pro model is specified at 90mm. A macro mode is missing. Nevertheless, this represents a significant improvement over the 12MP lens with 5.5x zoom and a 125mm focal length of the Mate 80.

The standard model uses the same battery as the Pro model – it has a capacity of 6,600 mAh and allows for 41 hours of video playback. However, wired charging is slower at 66W, while wireless charging remains unchanged at 50W. The predecessor model, the Mate 80, had a 5,750 mAh battery and also supported 66W and 50W charging.

The Mate 90 features an upgrade to third-generation Kunlun glass (up from second generation), but doesn’t benefit from the dual-layer OLED technology of the Pro model. Nevertheless, it offers a powerful 6.75-inch LTPO OLED display with a 1280p+ resolution and a 1–120 Hz refresh rate. Like its more expensive sibling, the Mate 90 also has a fiberglass back and is IP68 (waterproof to 6 m) and IP69K certified.

The Huawei Mate 90 is also available on vmall. There is no information yet on whether the Huawei Mate 90 Pro or the Mate 90 will be available worldwide, but the Mate 80 Pro was launched globally in March (following a release in China at the end of November).
