Its predecessor is now three years old, and an upgrade was long overdue – the Samsung SmartTag3 is here. This is the first generation to work across platforms – with both Android and iOS devices. It’s also smaller and lighter, though this comes at a price. Thanks to new wireless technology, Samsung has improved the range and extended the battery life.

The Samsung SmartTag3 can now also be used by iPhone owners – this makes it easier if you have Android and iOS devices in your family, or if a friend or family member wants to borrow a suitcase with a tag attached, for example.

Speaking of attachment: Samsung has removed the integrated keyring from the first two generations. This makes the new SmartTag 35% smaller and 33% lighter than the SmartTag2. To attach the new tag to a keyring or backpack, you’ll need one of the new silicone or Velcro covers. However, its smaller size makes it easier to integrate into items, such as a suitcase with a dedicated SmartTag3 compartment.

Samsung SmartTag3 with Bluetooth 6.0

The Samsung SmartTag3 features a compass view with Bluetooth 6.0 channel signaling. This displays the distance and direction of a tag from up to 60 meters away. That’s three times the range of its predecessor. At shorter distances, your smartphone (if equipped) can switch to UWB for further improved accuracy.

The Galaxy Find network comprises 900 million compatible devices worldwide – each one of which can send a signal as soon as it detects your lost item. Like its predecessor, the Samsung SmartTag3 also features an integrated NFC tag. This activates Lost Mode: it displays contact information or a short message to anyone who scans a tag you’ve marked as lost.

There’s a new feature called “Location Alerts.” This notifies you as soon as a marked item leaves or enters a defined area on the map. You can use this feature, for example, to be notified if your dog escapes from the garden, or to automate your home as soon as you arrive.

You can also use the new motion detection feature – this notifies you as soon as a tagged item moves. The “Abandoned” notification, on the other hand, informs you when you move away from the tagged item. With location history, you can track the path of a tagged item to its current location. The tag is IP67 certified and can therefore withstand being submerged in one meter of water for half an hour – normal rain and urban grime won’t harm it.

Having already mentioned home automation, the SmartThings IoT control allows routines to be triggered by pressing the built-in button during the day.

The tag is still powered by a button cell battery. However, the battery now lasts up to 550 days (10% longer than the 500 days of the SmartTag2) before it needs to be replaced. With the power-saving mode, the battery life can be extended to over two years (790 days instead of 700 days).

The Samsung SmartTag3 will launch in South Korea next week (October 7th) and will soon be available in the US. It will be available in other countries next year. It comes in two colors: black and white.
