Apple iPhone Duo: Production problems just before launch

The production yield for the Apple iPhone Duo is apparently lower than hoped to achieve the annual target of 6 to 8 million units.

Reports indicate that the Apple iPhone Duo is facing production difficulties ahead of its October launch, which is why the initial production volume is expected to be limited. A source close to the Foxconn supply chain told the Chinese news agency Jiemian News that the final assembly yield for Apple’s first foldable iPhone was just over 60% as of September 17.

According to the source, under Apple’s current quality standards, it could take another six months to a year for the assembly line to reach a satisfactory yield. Foxconn is reportedly continuously adjusting equipment, assembly processes, and production settings during the mass production of the Apple iPhone Duo. The source also stated that suppliers are waiting to see if Apple will relax its quality requirements to speed up production.

The problems apparently extend beyond final assembly. According to Jiemian News, Samsung Display’s foldable OLED panels and hinge components have experienced low yields, delivery delays, and design changes. These delays leave the assembly plant less time to optimize the production line.

The publication added that Apple tested liquid metal for some hinge parts before rethinking the process prior to mass production. According to Apple, the hinge consists of over 100 components and features a 3D-printed cover.

6 to 8 million Apple iPhone Duo

A supply chain source told Jiemian News that Apple’s global inventory target for the iPhone Duo in 2026 is around six to eight million units. The publication compared this figure to the 20 to 30 million units typically shipped for a single iPhone Pro or Pro Max model during a full product cycle. Another retail source indicated that Apple’s sales forecast is over five million units.

In another report, MyDrivers claims that one of the contract manufacturers of the Apple iPhone Duo asked Apple to choose between higher yields and increased production. The website argued that while more intensive production could produce more saleable phones, it would have the side effect of more defective devices and higher scrap costs.

The Apple iPhone Duo was unveiled on September 9th. Pre-orders begin on October 16th, and it will be available from October 23rd. The foldable iPhone is available in the US starting at $1,999 and in Europe starting at €2,299.
