The nubia NaviX Ultra, the first “AI smartphone” from ZTE’s gaming brand, is here. It’s based on the Doubao Mobile Assistant, which supports complex thinking, self-correction, context adaptation, and generalization.

Deep reasoning enables the AI to create a plan that breaks down a complex task into simpler subtasks. Self-correction helps the AI solve a task where unexpected problems have arisen. AI models can stray from course when performing long tasks; context-awareness helps Doubao stay on track. Generalization allows it to use knowledge from an app to solve a previously unknown problem.

nubia NaviX Ultra fingerprint sensor as AI button

The nubia NaviX Ultra uses the fingerprint sensor as an AI button. A short tap opens an input window. A long press activates voice control mode. A double tap starts a video call with the AI, allowing you to show it something using the smartphone’s cameras. Doubao is a multimodal AI and can therefore process text, images, audio, and video.

There’s a continuous dialogue mode, currently in beta, that allows for more intensive interaction with the AI on more complex tasks. For longer-running tasks, a widget is available that lets you track progress on your smartphone. You can also assign additional tasks to the AI, which will then intelligently reorder its task list. Of course, you can also manually prioritize important tasks.

The AI works with third-party apps and can even access the APIs of online services. These include Lark (a comprehensive collaboration suite), CaoCao Mobility (a Chinese robo-taxi company), the smartphone’s maps app, online music services, and much more. The AI can also answer incoming calls (including pre-defined conversation scripts), transcribe voice memos, search screenshots, recognize products on the screen, and much more.

The nubia NaviX Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and is available in 12/512 GB, 16/512 GB, and 16 GB/1 TB storage configurations (LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage). The smartphone ships with Android 16 instead of 17, but features the Nebula AIOS 2 user interface.

It features a 6.78-inch LTPO OLED display (1-144 Hz, 1260 x 2800 pixel resolution). The maximum brightness is 4500 nits, and the display supports DC dimming. The smartphone is 7.6 mm thin and weighs 208 g. The 7100 mAh battery supports fast wired (90 W) and wireless (50 W) charging, including reverse wireless charging.

The rear camera setup includes a 50MP main camera (1/1.4-inch sensor, f/1.6 lens with OIS), a 64MP periscope telephoto lens with 3x zoom (OIS, DCG HDR), and a 50MP ultrawide lens (115°, f/2.0 lens with autofocus). The selfie camera has a 32MP sensor.
